Fort Frederick is a landmark in the small town of Frederiksted St Croix. Built between 1752 and 1760, Fort Frederick stands on a site of an earlier fortification, Fort St James, built by the English during the 1640’s. Attacked and captured by the Spanish in 1650, it was later used by the French between 1650 and 1695. Fort Frederick lent a degree of support to the sugar industry on St Croix, which was to prove to be the island’s economic mainstay for over two hundred years.

On October 17, 2008, Hurricane Omar hit the island of St Croix. As it passed by, it turned into a Category 3 Hurricane, but not before doing millions of dollars worth of damage, mainly to many sailing vessels located in Christiansted, St Croix. After all was said and done, 40 boats were damaged. Many boats were slammed against the boardwalk that runs the entire length of the downtown area of Christiansted, which sustained extensive damage as well.
